Burnout doesn’t always look like falling apart. For a lot of the women I work with, it looks like still showing up, still delivering, still saying yes, while running on fumes underneath. You’re the capable one. So the warning signs are easy to explain away.
Here’s what burnout actually looks like when you’re used to holding it all together, and what helps once you name it.
Why high-achieving women miss the signs
When you’re good at pushing through, exhaustion can feel normal. You tell yourself it’s a busy season, and then the busy season never ends. The very things that make you dependable, your drive, your follow-through, your high tolerance for stress, are what let burnout hide in plain sight.
The signs worth paying attention to
Burnout tends to show up in a mix of these, not just one:
- You’re tired in a way that sleep doesn’t fix
- Small tasks feel heavier than they should
- You’re more irritable or short-tempered than usual
- You’ve stopped looking forward to things you used to enjoy
- You feel behind no matter how much you get done
- You’re getting sick more, or your body is sending signals you keep overriding
One of these on a hard week is just life. Several of them, most weeks, is worth taking seriously.
What actually helps
Not a spa day. Real relief comes from changing what’s draining you, not just recovering from it. That usually means looking at where your energy goes, what you can hand off or say no to, and the guilt that keeps you saying yes in the first place. In therapy, we take it one piece at a time, at a pace that fits your actual life.
